Service Information
Winnifred Schreiner age 104, of Onamia, formerly of Winthrop, passed away Wednesday, March 16th, 2016, at the Mille Lacs Nursing Home in Onamia.
Memorial Service will be Thursday, April 7th, 11:00 A.M. at First Lutheran Church in Winthrop with interment in the Winthrop Cemetery.
Gathering of Family and Friends will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Obituary
Winnifred Mary (King) (Mickus) Schreiner was born on June 11, 1911, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She was the daughter of Alfred and Sarah Elizabeth (Weston) King. Winnifred was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth. She was a graduate of Ross Collegiate in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, Canada. She furthered her education at Success Business College in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, Canada.
In June of 1939, Winnifred was united in marriage to LeRoy Mickus. The couple lived in Canada and in the late 40s, they moved to New Prague, Minnesota, and in 1951 to Winthrop. This union was blessed with two children. She was employed as the Deputy County Auditor for Sibley County. Winnifred and LeRoy shared 22 years of marriage, before LeRoy passed away in October of 1960.
On November 16, 1961, Winnifred was united in marriage to Frank Schreiner. After their marriage the couple resided in Winthrop. Winnifred and Frank shared 17 years of marriage before Frank passed away on November 10, 1979.
Winnifred was a very active member of First Lutheran Church in Winthrop. She was involved with Ladies Aid, Call Committee; making the meals for Vacation Bible School, and served as Church Secretary and Treasurer. Winnifred was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts, an active Kiwanis club member, served as Secretary/Treasurer for the Winthrop Golf Club, and also served on the City Charter Committee. She was a very caring, loving mother, wife, and homemaker.
Winnifred enjoyed bowling, golfing, traveling, knitting and playing Bridge. She also loved her weekly trips to Jackpot Junction to play Bingo. In her younger years, she played on the McBride’s Baseball Team in Canada. She remained an avid Minnesota Twins fan throughout her life.
When she needed assistance with her daily care, Winnifred became a resident of the Mille Lacs Nursing Home on March 31, 2008, and passed away there on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at the age of 104 years. Blessed be her memory.
Winnifred is survived by her:
Children, Carol Panos of Minneapolis, MN, and
Robert Mickus and his wife, Kaye of Onamia, MN;
Grandchildren, Andrew (Lisa) Mickus, Sarah (Mark) Lehnert;
Great-Grandchildren, Emma, Lily, Jack Mickus, Audrey, Evelyn, Corinne Lehnert;
Nieces, Nephews other relatives and friends.
Winnifred was preceded in death by her Parents, Alfred and Sarah Elizabeth King; First Husband, LeRoy Mickus; Second Husband, Frank Schreiner; Sister, Mona Humble; Brother, Colin King; and Son-In-Law, Charles Panos.
